In the continuation of our project “Cyprus HR Talking” we are glad to introduce you Melios Aristidou, Director of Human Resources at Parklane, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Limassol. You will know some specific details concerning hotel industry and about what kind of employees are in a big demand.
How would you describe the job market in Cyprus in the hotel industry?
Hotel industry is growing, tourism is at its best and new hotels are opening. The job market is competitive. Unfortunately a big number of hotel professionals left the industry due to the recent crisis. The recruitment of hotel cultured workforce is difficult as never before.
What are the most requested specialists and the ones in short supply in the hotel industry?
Chambermaids, Stewards and Waiters are in short supply. We don’t consider these positions as non-specialized. On the contrary, these positions are specialized as their work is very specific and valuable. Also, there is a difficulty on employing Management professionals, as said before due to the fleeing of hotel cultured workforce.
Any difficulties you meet during the recruiting process?
Hotel recruitment channels are very few in Cyprus, regarding local recruitment. In Cyprus, recruitment is mostly based on word of mouth references. As well, a lot of help from Union references and direct contact with hotels through application forms. It’s good that out of Cyprus channels are a lot, and useful.
Are the candidates based in Cyprus enough to fill your positions or you need to hunt abroad?
As I already mentioned, there is a big fleeing of local professionals and this doesn’t help as it affects quantity-for not achieving the number of headcounts to be selected, and quality-for not achieving the talent and qualifications needed to be selected. For these reasons we do need to hunt abroad as well.
How should CVs look like to get your attention?
The cv should be short and simple, clean, reader friendly. But beyond I wish to see Talent, Achievement, Personal Development, Career path, and how the candidate can assist the company in gaining its competitive advantages.
What are the main qualities you want to see in your candidates?
Passion, Energy, Pride, Flexibility, Culture, Team playing skills, Diversity tolerance, good work knowledge, technical capability, critical thinking.
What kind of interview do you prefer: simple dialogue, professional tests, or stress interview?
Usually individual, tandem and situational interviews, plus role play and collective participation (for example, once the Management team attended a social gathering with a candidate in a cafeteria in order to evaluate the candidate and feedback!)
What is the funniest story did you have with a candidate?
Funny story, but not funny for the candidate (and maybe embarrassing), better not to mention ).
